We'll Finish Star Wars: Outlaws Within Reasonable Time. Devs Promise That We Won't Get Assassin's Creed-Style Big Open World

The gameplay of Star Wars: Outlaws from the Summer Game Fest 2024 show was supposed to be just a modest sample of the game's open world, but the title won't be as big as Assassin's Creed.

The demonstration of Star Wars: Outlaws wasn't poor, but it received criticism, including from industry media. Julian Gerighty, the game's creative director, commented on these comments in an interview for Video Games Chronicle. As it turns out, the demo presented during the Ubisoft Forward stream is just an appetizer before the actual open-world gameplay in Star Wars: Outlaws.

Star Wars: Outlaws starter

The Frenchman noted that the team was keen on presenting all the basic elements of the game within a short, barely 20-minute material. This naturally made it impossible to showcase the openness of the world in SW: Outlaws.

[Materials from Star Wars: Outlaws] are consumer plus journalist focused, so we had to choose something that was 20 minutes, bite-sized, lots of variety, lots of representative systems, but not the open world experience, because we’re going to expose that during the studio tour, in the preview event over here. So we’ll spend a lot more time on those things, so this is an amuse bouche, it’s a starter rather than the main course for the game.

Greighter added that this "demo" was prepared with all the other this year's events in mind. For this is how the "developer" of the title decided. However, the world of SW: Outlaws will be showcased more effectively during the pre-release presentation at Ubisoft Massive studio.

Adventure for 30 hours

It should be added that some players have slightly different complaints related to Outlaws. Some Internet users are afraid of an exaggeratedly large world, similar to the maps from latest installments of the Assassin's Creed series.

Gerighty also responded to these comments. The team intended for Star Wars: Outlaws to be finishable within 25-30 hours, with a complete playthrough requiring 50-60 hours. It's still a lot, but - according to the creative director - it won't be an "epic" 200-hour adventure like in Assassin's Creed. Instead of expanding the game's world, studio prefers to focus on the "details."

By the way, the dev mentioned that the game will lack the swimming option. Such mechanics were considered at the beginning of development, but ultimately they were abandoned. However, there was room for unplanned elements from the beginning - various mini-games.

Gerighty didn't address all of the criticism (in fact, he admitted that he did not see all of such comments). We can only hope that the unmentioned elements (including character movement) will be improved for the premiere.

Star Wars: Outlaws will be released on August 30 on PC, PS5, and XSX/S. The game will offer early access, which will allow you to start playing 3 days earlier.
